  • Ministry of Consolation | Holy Spirit Catholic Church

< Back Ministry of Consolation Offer hospitality and comfort to grieving families through funeral reception. The Ministry of Consolation serves families during one of life's most difficult moments by offering hospitality, compassion, and support following the Funeral Liturgy of a parishioner. Members of this ministry prepare and serve luncheon receptions for family and friends following funeral services, providing a welcoming space where loved ones can gather, share memories, and find comfort in the presence of the parish community. These receptions, held in the Family Life Center, accommodate up to 50 guests and are coordinated by two rotating teams. Because responsibilities are shared, team members are typically called upon to serve only a few times each year. The ministry also assists with the annual Mass of Remembrance , celebrated on All Souls Day (November 2) for parishioners who have died during the previous year and for all the faithful departed. Following the Mass in the parish cemetery near the Columbarium, ministry members provide a light luncheon for attendees. This ministry is a meaningful opportunity to serve others with Christ's love. • Cemetery | Holy Spirit Catholic Church

Cemetery & Columbarium "And Joseph took the body, and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud, and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn in the rock; and he rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, and departed." (Mathew 27:59–60) The Catholic Church has always treated the burial of the dead as a work of mercy. From the earliest centuries, Christians have cared for the bodies of the faithful with reverence, in the sure hope of resurrection. Holy Spirit Cemetery and Columbarium offer our parish community a place to rest in consecrated ground — cared for, prayed over, and held in the communion of this parish family. YOUR OPTIONS Cemetery & Columbarium Holy Spirit offers two options for the interment of remains, both located on our parish grounds at 3871 Betsy Kerrison Parkway. Cemetery Traditional in-ground burial is available to Catholics entitled to Christian burial under the guidelines of the Roman Catholic Church and the Diocese of Charleston. The grounds are maintained with perpetual care and are open dawn to dusk every day of the year. Columbarium & Urn Garden For those who choose cremation, we offer columbarium niches and an urn garden — intimate, well-kept spaces for cremated remains. Small floral arrangements are welcome at niches for birthdays, anniversaries, and holy seasons. Both options provide the same assurance: your loved one rests in a sacred place, within this community, for generations to come. QUESTIONS ABOUT AVAILABILITY? Office Hours: Tuesdays 9-11:30am Inquiries available by appointment. Steve Reddan cemetery@holyspiritsc.org (843) 768-0357 PLAN AHEAD Consider Planning Before You Need To Planning your burial — or that of a loved one — is one of the most practical and loving things you can do for your family. It removes the burden of difficult decisions from a moment of grief and gives you the opportunity to make your wishes known. We welcome conversations about cemetery and columbarium options at any stage of life. There is no pressure and no obligation. Our team will answer your questions and help you understand what's available. To learn more or schedule a time to talk, contact the cemetery@holyspiritsc.org Holy Spirit Cemetery is governed by the Diocese of Charleston's guidelines. These standards preserve the sacred, distinctly Catholic character of the grounds. Our team is happy to walk you through what's permitted for monuments, memorials, and graveside remembrances. • Respite Care Meals | Holy Spirit Catholic Church

< Back Respite Care Meals Prepare and deliver meals that support families caring for loved ones with special needs or disabilities. Respite Care Charleston is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing support to those living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. By using several locations throughout the area it allows caretakers to take a break from caring for their loved ones. Holy Spirit has committed to providing two meals a month on every other Thursday to their meeting location at St. Johns Parish Church. A volunteer would choose one of the available dates, make a meal for 12 people and deliver it to St. Johns Parish Church at 3673 Maybank Hwy, Johns Island, SC between 9:30-11:00 am. (Please note the delivery is NOT made to Holy Spirit). The meal is to consist of a protein, vegetable (can be included in a casserole entree dish or on the side) and a dessert. Food that is easy to serve and that does not need to be cut up by the client is preferred. It does not need to be in individual servings and Respite Care has the plates, and cutlery. It is suggested you use throw away containers for the food you deliver as you will be dropping the food off. The staff and volunteers at St. Johns have a full kitchen and take care of reheating food, if necessary, and serving it. This is just a one time/one date commitment for any volunteers. • Ushers | Holy Spirit Catholic Church

< Back Ushers Welcome parishioners and support a prayerful, organized, and hospitable Mass experience. The Ushers serve to welcome parish members and especially visitors to Mass at each service. A smile and greeting for everyone to make them feel welcome can mean a lot, particularly if they are having a less than stellar day. Ushers assist in helping people find facilities, get seated at crowded masses, talk to a priest if needed, or find a spot for those with mobility issues. Ushers are responsible for the passing of the offertory baskets and securing the money as well. Lastly, Ushers pass out bulletins to parishioners as they depart and invite them back for next week. If you can smile, talk to friends and strangers alike and make everyone feel welcome, the Usher Ministry may be for you! • Social Sunday | Holy Spirit Catholic Church

< Back Social Sunday Build parish community through hospitality, coffee, and welcoming fellowship after Mass. The Social Sunday ministry is all about hospitality, connection, and community. After Mass, we create a welcoming space out front where parishioners can gather, greet one another, and continue the joy of worship through simple fellowship over coffee and donuts. This ministry is rooted in the gift of hospitality—offering a warm, friendly environment where people feel at home and conversations can begin, deepen, and grow. A simple cup of coffee or snack can become an opportunity for someone to feel seen, known, and welcomed in the parish community. We are currently looking for additional volunteers to help prepare, serve, and host our Social Sundays. Whether you enjoy setting up, greeting guests, or simply lending a hand where needed, there is a place for you in this ministry. And yes—if you like donuts and coffee, you’ll fit right in. Come help us bring hospitality to the next level and make Social Sundays a true extension of the joy of the Eucharist. • Catholic Men's Reading Group | Holy Spirit Catholic Church

< Back Catholic Men's Reading Group Read. Reflect. Discuss. Grow. Men building faith and fellowship through books, conversation, and shared wisdom. The Men's Reading Group brings together parish men who share a love of reading, thoughtful conversation, and growing in faith. Through books, discussion, and fellowship, participants have the opportunity to reflect on important themes, learn from one another, and deepen their relationship with God. The group meets monthly to discuss a selected book, with each member invited to share his thoughts, insights, questions, likes, and dislikes. Discussions are respectful and welcoming, encouraging a variety of perspectives while focusing on understanding rather than debate. The goal is not simply to finish a book, but to enrich each participant's personal faith journey through reflection and shared experience. Book selections are chosen by the members and vary throughout the year, providing opportunities to explore different topics related to faith, spirituality, history, and Christian living. Meeting Time The Men's Reading Group meets on the third Monday of each month from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM in the Family Life Center. New members are always welcome. Whether you are an avid reader or simply looking for meaningful conversation and fellowship, we invite you to join us. For more information, contact Robert Speziale at bspeziale@comcast.net . • Lectors | Holy Spirit Catholic Church

< Back Lectors Proclaim the Word of God clearly and prayerfully during the celebration of the liturgy. Lectors proclaim the Living Word of God during the Sacred Liturgy. This ministry is a sacred responsibility that calls for preparation, reverence, and a love for Scripture. Through their proclamation, lectors help the assembly encounter Christ speaking through His Word. Volunteers are provided with a Lector Handbook and guidance to support prayerful preparation and confident proclamation. Scheduling is published in three-month cycles, allowing lectors to plan ahead or arrange substitutes when needed. Part-time residents are welcome and encouraged to share their availability so scheduling can be coordinated effectively. Serving as a lector is an opportunity to grow in faith, deepen one’s familiarity with Scripture, and help others hear God’s voice in the liturgy.
