  • About Us | Holy Spirit Catholic Church

About Us HOLY SPIRIT CATHOLIC CHURCH Loved, Transformed, and Sent We are one community, Loved by the Father, Transformed by the Son, and Sent by the Holy Spirit. "And they held steadfastly to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of the bread and to the prayers. And fear came upon every soul; and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common; and they sold their possessions and goods and distributed them to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they partook of food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved." Acts 2:42-47, The First Christian Community EXPECTING MORE Filled With the Holy Spirit God the Father, "who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think" (Ephesians 3:20), has more for every person — more love, more joy , more peace. Our parish life is built around three ideas related to the more God has for us: Discovering More — encountering the love of God through worship and the sacraments; Developing More — growing in faith and being transformed at every age and stage of life; and Delivering More — being sent out to use our gifts and charisms to bring God's love to our neighbors and our world. Holy Spirit Catholic Church is in the Diocese of Charleston , and we are proud to be the Catholic community serving Johns Island, Wadmalaw Island, Seabrook Island, and Kiawah Island. FIND YOUR PLACE HERE STORIES OF MORE What Happens When People Open Themselves to Receiving More These are the stories of ordinary people who said yes — and found something extraordinary waiting for them. Ride the Bus "One day during Mass, I asked myself what I was doing there. I realized that while I understood and enjoyed the liturgy, I was envious of the peace and stability my in-laws possessed. I wanted to acquire the simple, "childlike" trust they had in the Holy Spirit." Wayne Divine Intervention "In January I learned that I had a brain tumor, later diagnosed as glioblastoma. My tumor was removed the following day, and when I woke up in the recovery room, I knew I needed to return to my Catholic faith. I truly believe God intervened and gave me a second chance." Patty God is Faithful "Learning and believing in the Sacraments, Mary and the Saints was a big part of my decision to convert. I feel the Holy Spirits presence during the Mass and in the Eucharist... I take time to pray and listen to God for his guidance in how to help our Parish and community." Deborah Continue reading these stories and submit your own! Parishioners are encouraged to make advance funeral plans in terms of selection of readings and hymns. Mass of Christian Burial (Adult) Memorial Mass Funeral Music Selections Resources Holy Spirit Music Selections USCCB Bereavement and Funerals USCCB Information on Cremation FROM THE USCCB An Overview of Catholic Funeral Rites The Catholic funeral rite is divided into several stations, or parts, each with its own purpose. Learn more about them below. Vigil Service (Wake) "At the vigil, the Christian community keeps watch with the family in prayer to the God of mercy and finds strength in Christ's presence" (Order of Christian Funerals, no. 56). The Vigil Service usually takes place during the period of visitation and viewing at the funeral home. It is a time to remember the life of the deceased and to commend him/her to God. In prayer we ask God to console us in our grief and give us strength to support one another. The Vigil Service can take the form of a Service of the Word with readings from Sacred Scripture accompanied by reflection and prayers. It can also take the form of one of the prayers of the Office for the Dead from the Liturgy of the Hours. The clergy and your funeral director can assist in planning such service. It is most appropriate, when family and friends are gathered together for visitation, to offer time for recalling the life of the deceased. For this reason, eulogies are usually encouraged to be done at the funeral home during visitation or at the Vigil Service. Funeral Liturgy The funeral liturgy is the central liturgical celebration of the Christian community for the deceased. When one of its members dies, the Church encourages the celebration of the funeral liturgy at a Mass. When Mass cannot be celebrated, a funeral liturgy outside Mass can be celebrated at the church or in the funeral home. At the funeral liturgy, the Church gathers with the family and friends of the deceased to give praise and thanks to God for Christ's victory over sin and death, to commend the deceased to God's tender mercy and compassion, and to seek strength in the proclamation of the Paschal Mystery. The funeral liturgy, therefore, is an act of worship, and not merely an expression of grief. Rite of Committal (Burial or Interment) The Rite of Committal, the conclusion of the funeral rite, is the final act of the community of faith in caring for the body of its deceased member. It should normally be celebrated at the place of committal, that is, beside the open grave or place of interment. In committing the body to its resting place, the community expresses the hope that, with all those who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith, the deceased awaits the glory of the resurrection. The Rite of Committal is an expression of the communion that exists between the Church on earth and the Church in heaven: the deceased passes with the farewell prayers of the community of believers into the welcoming company of those who need faith no longer, but see God face-to-face. A NOTE ON CREMATION Guidelines on Cremation The Catholic Church permits cremation, provided it is not chosen for reasons that are contrary to Christian belief in the resurrection of the body. The Church asks that cremated remains be treated with the same respect as the body, and that they be buried or interred in a sacred place rather than scattered or kept at home. A full Funeral Mass can be celebrated with the body present before cremation, or a Mass of Christian Burial can be celebrated with the cremated remains. USCCB GUIDLINES ON CREMATION ETERNAL REST Cemetery and Columbarium We are blessed to have a Catholic cemetery and columbarium here at Holy Spirit. The cemetery and columbarium are located behind the historic chapel. There are currently spaces available. Learn more here. LEARN ABOUT THE CEMETERY

  • Maintenance Volunteers | Holy Spirit Catholic Church

< Back Maintenance Volunteers Serving the church by caring for it's grounds and facilities. Do you like working with your hands? Know your way around a toolbox? Or simply enjoy helping things get done? The Maintenance Ministry is a practical way to serve Holy Spirit by helping care for our church, grounds, and facilities. We’ll meet Tuesdays from 9:00 AM–12:00 PM to tackle projects big and small—from changing filters and hanging signs to painting, pressure washing, repairing kneelers, and keeping our grounds looking their best. You don’t have to be a professional. If you have experience with home repairs, maintenance, or a particular trade, we’d love to have you. And if you’re simply willing to show up, lend a hand, and be patient with the work, there’s a place for you, too. Some of the projects we’ll take on include: Painting and pressure washing Minor electrical, plumbing, and carpentry repairs Changing light bulbs and filters Setting up tables and chairs Grounds and landscaping projects Hanging shelves, signs, and banners Furniture assembly Restocking supplies General repairs and upkeep Upcoming projects include: Replacing and painting boards on the pond fence Removing tree stumps Cleaning parking lot lamps Repairing church kneelers Expanding storage space What we’re looking for: A willingness to serve, some patience for the work, and the ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds. Experience with maintenance, home projects, repairs, or the trades is a plus. Being comfortable working at heights is another bonus. Come help us take care of the place we call home.
