Adopt-a-Family

Serve island families in need by packing and delivering food during seasonal outreach events.

The Adopt-a-Family ministry is one of Holy Spirit Catholic Church’s most known works of charity and community care. Rooted in the Gospel call to serve those in need, this outreach provides food assistance to families on Johns Island and Wadmalaw Island during both Christmas and the Fourth of July holiday seasons.

Over 25 years ago, this ministry began with a simple mission: to share the generosity of our parish with families in need. Today, that mission continues on a much larger scale, with nearly 300 families receiving support through carefully prepared food packages that include five bags of shelf-stable groceries, a ham, and fresh produce.

This is a parish-wide effort made possible through prayer, generosity, and service. In the weeks leading up to each distribution, parishioners are invited to support the program through financial donations, with a suggested contribution of $150 per family served—though every gift, large or small, makes a meaningful difference.

Volunteers also play a vital role in the success of this ministry. On one evening, teams gather in the church to sort and pack food into family-sized bags. The following morning, volunteers deliver these groceries directly to homes, ensuring that families are reached with dignity, care, and personal connection.

Whether through time, donations, or both, every participant helps extend the love of Christ to those in need in a very tangible way.
